Born in Japan

Privacy Policy

Born in Japan team (the "Operator"), which operates "Born in Japan" (日本に生まれる; the "Service") from Japan, handles the information used in the Service as described below.

1. No registration required

You can use the Service without creating an account or logging in. You are never asked to enter your name, address, phone number, or the like (except for an email address you choose to enter in the feedback form).

2. Information stored only on your device

The following information is stored only in your browser's storage (localStorage) and is not sent to the Operator's servers. If you clear your browser data, this information is also deleted.

Using "Transfer Your Records," you can export this information as text or a file and import it on another device. Please manage anything you export yourself.

3. Analytics (external transmission)

To improve the Service, we use Google Analytics (Google LLC) and Cloudflare Web Analytics (Cloudflare, Inc.). In accordance with Article 27-12 of Japan's Telecommunications Business Act, we disclose the information transmitted as follows.

RecipientInformation sentPurpose
Google LLC (Google Analytics)Pages viewed; interaction information (how far you've progressed in a life, decisions shown and chosen, use of share buttons, starting and finishing "Look back on my life"); device and browser information; IP address; a cookie-based identifierUnderstanding usage and improving the Service
Cloudflare, Inc. (Cloudflare Web Analytics)Pages viewed, page load speed, referrer, device and browser information, country (no cookies or device identifiers are used)Understanding page load speed and usage

Names, short notes, your answers during breathers, and your answers and writing in "Look back on my life" are not sent to analytics. We do not use the information for advertising (no advertising cookies or personalized ads).

You can decline or allow analytics at any time via . For visits from the European Economic Area, the UK, and Switzerland, we don't run cookie-based analytics until you allow it (this setting applies to Google Analytics; Cloudflare Web Analytics measures without cookies). For how Google handles data, see "How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services."

Information shown in "Everyone's Lives"

When you live a life to the end, a summary of that life (birth prefecture, birth year, sex, age at death, title, net worth, family situation, the name automatically assigned by the game, the text of major events generated by the game, and a pixel-art scene from its high point) is stored anonymously in a database operated by Cloudflare, Inc. (Cloudflare D1) and shown to other people in "Everyone's Lives" on the home page and the memorial. It does not include any text entered by the player, such as names or notes you entered yourself, your answers during breathers, or pet names. If you press "Don't show it" on the results screen, that life will no longer be shown. When you "leave flowers" for someone else's life, that life's flower count goes up by one (the same person can leave one bouquet per life per day; to check this, we temporarily use a value derived from information about where the request came from, which is deleted when it expires). We also count only the number of lives born and show "how many people were born in the last 20 minutes" and "how many people have been born so far" (we do not record who played).

4. Information sent through the feedback form

What you send through "Send Feedback" (the message, the category you chose, and your optional email address), along with your browser type and country at the time of sending, is stored in a database operated by Cloudflare, Inc. (Cloudflare D1) and reviewed by the Operator. Entries are automatically deleted after one year from storage (if the Operator has set up email notifications, the same content is also delivered to the Operator through the email delivery service Resend (Resend, Inc.)). It is used only to respond to feedback and improve the Service. We do not reply to feedback individually. Your email address is used only to contact you when our team would like to hear more from you.

5. Voting on the roadmap

When you vote on "Roadmap and Voting," we store which feature you voted for and a value used to prevent duplicate votes in a database operated by Cloudflare, Inc. (Cloudflare D1). To identify voters, a signed identifier issued by the server is stored in a cookie (for up to one year). To limit duplicate votes on the same feature, we also store a hash value created from your IP address using a secret key. We do not store the IP address itself or browser information for identification. When you withdraw a vote, its record is deleted. If you delete the cookie, you may no longer be able to withdraw earlier votes. If you share an IP address with others, such as at a school or workplace, you may not be able to vote after someone else has voted.

To limit spam, we temporarily store the number of feedback submissions and votes along with a hash value of your IP address. Rate-limit records that have expired are deleted progressively the next time the API is used. Even if you decline analytics, the cookie that prevents duplicate votes and the anti-abuse measures still operate.

5-2. Server logs

The Service is delivered using the services of Cloudflare, Inc. For delivery, Cloudflare may temporarily record information such as your IP address and the date and time of access.

6. Provision to businesses in foreign countries

The Service is operated from Japan. Google LLC, Resend, Inc., and Cloudflare, Inc., mentioned above, are businesses based in the United States. The United States does not have a comprehensive personal information protection law equivalent to Japan's Act on the Protection of Personal Information. Each company handles information according to its own privacy policy.

7. Provision to third parties

Except as required by law, we do not provide personal information to third parties without the person's consent.

8. Share buttons

When you press a share button for X, LINE, Threads, or another service, that service's page opens. From there, information is handled according to each service's privacy policy. Unless you press a button, the Service does not send any information to these services.

9. Contact and revisions

For inquiries about this policy, please write to [email protected]. We will revise this policy as needed and announce any changes on this page.
